Usually when we analyze the static forces applied to these materials it is much easier because it can be calculated and hence it could be simulated in software such as Solidworks, and we could find all the characteristics for 7075 and 6061 on the internet but what is really unpredictable and difficult to analyze is the dynamic impacts which is why we did this test. For each property being compared, the top bar is 6061-T6 aluminum and the bottom bar is 7075-T6 aluminum. Both contain magnesium, silicon, copper, iron, zinc, titanium, manganese and chromium. 6061-T6 Aluminum 7075-T6 Aluminum. var cnzz_protocol = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? " First of all we made two L shaped pieces of AL 6061 and 7075 and used 3 stainless steel screws to attach them. the competition took place in Johor, Malaysia. 6061 Aluminum. We were initially a group of 3 all Electrical engineers, so we had to learn Solidworks in order to design the robot and learn solidworks we did. What is the difference between 6061 and 7075 Aluminum grades? (the one on the right is the 7075 and left 6061), So this is after test 2 and at this stage the 7075 was a little bit bend and the screws were loose as well, but for 6061 more bend and deformation but still tighten screws. (Hence the debate between 6061 vs 7075 aluminum.) Each piece had two 10 cm by 10 cm plates with depth of 10mm screwed in L shaped perpendicularly with 3 stainless steel screws, as seen in the figure below. Now that we had our specimens we needed to conduct the test, which included hitting each of them basically in different ways and in specific points, which were something like this: Although it is hard to differentiate AL 6061 and 7075 by looking at their appearance but there are differences the 7075 has a more smoother and sort of darker grey whereas 6061 is lighter grey. ( Log Out /  6061 aluminum alloy and 7075 aluminum alloy are widely used in our lives. The difference among 6061 6063 and 7075 First of all, different alloy composition 6061 aluminum plate and aluminum plate 6063 is 6 series aluminum plate, 6 series aluminum plate is aluminum, magnesium, silicon alloy.7075 aluminum alloy elements for aluminum, zinc. Hitting the specimen on the sides, or the lateral sides with the smallest area while its clamped with a Vice Clamp. Change ), You are commenting using your Facebook account. Robots body dimensions were 44cm X 46cm X 10cm. However people don’t bother on the type of Aluminum they use such as AL 6061, AL 7075, AL2024 etc. Both are furnished in the T6 temper. The chemical differences between 6061 and 7075 aren’t readily visible. Industrial Co., Ltd. all rights reserved. From 8th of August until 16th of October 2016, I joined a team of undergraduate students preparing for a Robot combat competition. 6061-T6 is RB 60 1018 cold drawn is RB 71 7075-T651 is RB 87 You should be able to tell the difference. Hitting each of the L shaped specimen at the screwed area 10 times, facing the inside of the L towards the ground. Today, I’d like to discuss the difference between 6061 and 7075 aluminum alloy. View all posts by haroon1995. It was called MRC 2016. Difference Between Aluminum 7075 and 6061. So here are the specimen after the tests. In order to test what happens to the tapped holes we hit each of the two blocks of the specimen separately in order to apply a shear force of some sort. Site Index Product Index Technical Support: coverweb We did try to completely break the specimen with an ax and after a significant amount of time we did accomplish that, keeping in mind we did our best to keep the impact or the force same for both specimen while hitting them, and we saw that the 7075 broke one or two impact earlier then 6061. From 8th of August until 16th of October 2016, I joined a team of undergraduate students preparing for a Robot combat competition. Finally we start hitting it with the hammer while its lateral sides the L shaped side is facing the ground, bearing in mind since human force was used to hit or test the specimen so the amount of force applied on each hit simultaneously might not have been congruous, but we could say that the impact was approximately similar. For the video click on this. ( Log Out /  The above table is 6061 and 7075 various strength measurement data. Known as the all-purpose aluminum grade, most … Many people think that they all are the same, little that they know that small factors can be game changers in these type of competition. (7075 to the right and 6061 to the left). Whenever you have a need for any of our products, please feel free to contact us . But the difference is how much is contained in each. ( Log Out /  6061 vs 7075 Aluminum. The structure or body of the robot was made out of Aluminum because of its light weight and strength, because we had a weight limit of 30 kg so we had to use Aluminum and besides that is what everyone uses for the robot’s main body. In order to choose the best material for our robot we conducted a test to find out which Aluminum type is the best for robot combat. As you can see the top left is the specimen after Test 1, at that point 7075 was not deformed but the screws were a bit loose and as for 6061, there were a lot of deformation and a lot of chipped off and broken pieces but the screws were still tight, which was expected since 7075 has higher hardness and ultimate tensile strength compare to 6061. Writing this blog for sharing and trying new stuff that I have learned in the world of electrical engineering. 7068 is supposed to be 30% stronger than 7075, but I have never used it before. ( Log Out /  After test three 7075 was less bend and so were the screws since we were using stainless steel screws so a little impact was transferred to them as well and hence the screws felt like they were tightened but actually they were deformed, and for 6061 it had a lot of deformation and bends but screws still tight although it had a lot of damage on the outside. In order to make a proper material choice we need to understand the benefits that each grade can offer. Metric Units US Customary Units. So, what’s the difference between the two—let’s find out. The plates were bend mostly for 6061 and less for 7075 same thing could be said for deformation, 6061 had more of them as well. Particularly in comparison to 7075-T6511 or 6061-T6, how does it compare for hardness or chip breaking ability, smoothness of machined threads, etc. Electrical Engineer soon to be .. officially .... other interest areas combat robotics Use a center punch to compare with a piece of 1018 or better with a known piece of 6061. the competition took place in Johor, Malaysia. When deciding on a material for prototypes, structural, aerospace, and many other applications, 6061 and 7075 aluminum alloys are commonly brought up. Professional aluminum plates/sheets/coils/foils/circles manufacturer in China. Specifically, 6061 aluminum contains less zinc than 7075. I have personally found 7075-T6511 to be a bugger for stringing, especially when boring or grooving. During this period we built a 30 kg Combat robot from scratch including our own controller rather than plug and play or already made … Mechanical Properties. 7075-T651 is about 20% harder than mild steel while 6061-T6 is quite a bit softer than cold drawn 1018. 6061 aluminum alloy: In the 6061 specification aluminum alloy, the alloying element accounts for 97.9%, the magnesium element accounts for 1%, the silicium element accounts for 0.6%, and the other adds 0.28% copper and 0.2% chromium (Chromium). After applying different types of impacts on the two plates we saw that for AL 6061 after the test the screws were tight but for 7075 they were loose, the screws which were made of stainless steel were straight for 6061 after the test but they were moderately bent for 7075’s case, also the screw holes for 6061 were squeezed significantly but for 7075’s case they were not squeezed and the threads for the screws, which were tapped manually by hand with a tapper, for 7075 were fine and still was possible to screw a screw feasibly inside the holes but for 6061 the screw threads were damaged inordinately, so we could say from that, that 7075 has more elasticity and also transferred the impact to the ground and not putting force on the screw hole or its threads whereas 6061 is more prone to elongation so more bend compared to 7075 and transferred the force to the screw holes and bend the screw and the holes and there is a chance that 6061 behave like that because of the stainless screws we were using to tighten the two plates in which case we can get an approximation on how would each react with stainless steel screws tightening each of them.
