I want to go back to the thesis of the book and talk about privilege. Before that, she was a junior fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows (2011–2013), did her graduate work at MIT (2006–2011), and was an undergraduate at the University of Melbourne (2001–2005), where she studied philosophy, logic, and computer science. “Down Girl” explores the reasons that misogyny persists, even in supposedly post-patriarchal parts of the world, including the United States. Her work is primarily in feminist philosophy, moral philosophy and social philosophy. There was no way of knowing the objective truth. And it’s often to patriarchy’s advantage to exploit women’s labor in subordinate positions. The idea of winning or dominating others as an end in itself is one I tend to find objectionable. Misogyny, to me, is more about policing and controlling women’s behavior. Millions rely on Vox’s explainers to understand an increasingly chaotic world. One part of the book that I found disturbing was when Peterson responded in his capacity as a psychologist to a particular client. Academia.edu is a platform for academics to share research papers. There was no objective observer, and there never would be. Perpetrators of violence, we’re told, dehumanize their victims. The day before, the Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker had tried to distance himself from Jeffrey Epstein, the financier accused of trafficking dozens of girls for sex. I think, rather, there is a more empowered segment of the population that is coming together to protest the ways in which men have long abused power, which are particularly disadvantageous to women and more vulnerable women, especially. Poland had some of the strictest abortion laws in Europe. The day before, the Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker had tried to distance himself from Jeffrey Epstein, the financier accused of trafficking dozens of girls for sex. Yeah, I do, actually. When high-profile women are lightning rods for misogyny and racism and their intersection in misogynoir, I think we would do well to pay attention to it, not as an issue that affects them personally but rather as an issue that affects all women who are in a similar demographic, and which will be visited on more vulnerable women in that category in disproportionately problematic ways. I think that there are extraordinary challenges facing parents of cis boys, which I have to admit that I, as someone who’s a recent parent and the parent of a girl, don’t have a good handle on. So that’s been something that’s a positive. So I think those kinds of cases show that some of the same privileges do attend men who are not as powerful in those other dimensions.
