On May 2, 2002, this was the third race track only behind the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Bonneville Salt Flats to receive the honor of being in the National Register of Historic Places, On Sept 15, 1968 the Hillsborough 150 was the last race at the speedway, a 167 lap event. It's a great park just make sure you have someone riding shotgun or you are paying close attention as it's really easy to miss the entrance. Historic Occoneechee Speedway Trail is a 1.3 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Hillsborough, North Carolina that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. The Occoneechee Speedway is an old NASCAR raceway full of history. The flat 0.9 mile oval is a nice stroll with huge trees on either side, as well as some side trails to the Eno River. My kids are definitely the more wander and pick up rocks kind of walkers, so … The speedway is flat, but for those with mobility issues or strollers, there’s maybe 20 yards of hill to navigate between the flat parking lot and the flat speedway.
